Um novo relatório do Banco Mundial (Bird) divulgado ontem mostra que, entre 2000 e 2005, o Brasil foi o país que mais desmatou no mundo. Seriam 31 mil quilômetros quadrados de floresta derrubada anualmente, segundo o órgão. Em segundo lugar aparece a Indonésia: 18,7 mil km2 por ano. Em terceiro está o Sudão, com 5,9 km2.A Amazônia é onde mais se desmata no Brasil. Os dados oficiais do governo brasileiro, computados pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), indicam taxa de derrubada média anual na região de cerca de 22 mil km2 - ainda que dois dos três maiores índices já registrados sejam de 2004 (27.379 km2) e 2003 (25.282 km2). O Inpe não monitora outros biomas, como o cerrado e a mata atlântica.
As informações do Bird fazem parte do Relatório de Monitoramento Global 2008, que avalia o status de cumprimento das Metas do Milênio. De acordo com ele, a perda de área florestal no planeta foi de 73 mil km2 por ano entre 2000 e 2005. A África Subsaariana é a região que mais derrubou, cerca de 47 mil km2 - a América Latina e Caribe aparecem com 41 mil km2. As informações são do jornal O Estado de S. Paulo.
